Every fall, picture day lands on the school calendar. Parents pick an outfit, teachers straighten a few collars, kids line up, and somewhere in the middle of an already busy school day, we take a photograph. Read what to wear for photo day here!
It can feel like just another school tradition.
But fall school photos are actually documenting something that's changing much faster than we realize.
A Snapshot of Who They Are Right Now
Especially during the preschool and elementary years, kids can look completely different from one school year to the next.
The toddler who wouldn't leave their teacher's side becomes the preschooler proudly walking up to our camera alone. The kindergartener with the slightly crooked smile becomes a confident second grader. Teeth disappear. Hair gets longer. Personalities get bigger.
Fall school pictures capture them right at the beginning of that year's chapter.
And that's one reason we think school photos deserve to be more than a rushed smile in front of a generic background.
Why We Photograph More Than One Look
At Those Photo Ladies, our goal isn't simply to get one usable photo.
We want parents to open their child's gallery and actually see their kid.
That might be the big smile everyone knows. But sometimes it's the little smirk. The serious expression. The head tilt. The hands in the pockets. Or the look that immediately makes a parent say, "Yep. That's them." Read about what happens when kids won’t smile for us!
We spend time getting multiple poses and expressions because children aren't one-dimensional, and their school pictures shouldn't be either.
Fall Photos Become Part of Your Family's History
There's something different about having a professional photograph of your child from every school year.
Years from now, you probably won't remember exactly how tall they were in preschool or the way they smiled when their two front teeth were missing.
The photograph remembers for you.
School portraits become the pictures tucked into grandparents' homes, displayed on the refrigerator, framed down a hallway, placed in yearbooks, and pulled back out years later when everyone wants to remember just how little they once were.
School Picture Day Without the Pressure
Parents sometimes worry about whether their child will cooperate, smile, or "do well" for pictures.
That's our job.
Our photographers work with children every school picture season, including toddlers, preschoolers, elementary students, middle schoolers, and students who need a little more time or a different approach.
You handle the clean outfit and hair.
We'll handle the rest.
