School picture day is one of those milestone moments that sneak up on families—and deciding what your child should wear can feel like a big decision. You want their personality to shine, their outfit to pop, and the photo to look timeless on your wall or in a yearbook. Whether your child is in preschool or middle school, this guide will help you dress them for success on picture day. Make sure you check with your school’s promo material to see what the background is for the specific photos you’re planning for! It is always printed on the school promo material as an example.
For Non-Sitting Babies
Style Tips:
Avoid overalls: They bunch up and are difficult to pull down when holding baby in photo positions.
If wearing a onesie, layer with shorts, a skirt, or a dress with bloomers for a polished look.
Shoes are optional—bare feet look adorable and photograph beautifully.
If you include a hair accessory, let the teacher know—we’ll do our best to get it on for the photo! Sometimes photo day is chaotic but we will try our best!
For Preschoolers (Ages 1–5)
Style Tips:
Keep it comfy: If it’s itchy or stiff, it will show in their expressions.
Bright, solid colors: Jewel tones (like emerald, royal blue, mustard) photograph beautifully.
Avoid characters or text: Distracting logos or prints can take away from their sweet little face.
Extras:
Hair should be styled but not overly done—think natural curls, simple ponytails, or neat partings.
If they’re bringing a lovey or favorite toy, leave it off-camera unless it's part of the memory you want captured. Often times if they bring a movie to the camera station, our photographers will start with it and gradually work up to photos without it.
For Elementary Kids (Grades K–5)
Style Tips:
Layer smartly: Vests, cardigans, and jackets can add texture and polish.
Pick colors that contrast with your child’s hair/skin tone to avoid looking washed out.
Minimal patterns: Small florals or subtle plaids can add interest without overwhelming.
Extras:
Have your child try the full outfit on the night before, including shoes if they're showing.
Stick with classic accessories like a headband or simple necklace.
For Middle Schoolers (Grades 6–8)
Style Tips:
Let them express their personality while gently guiding them toward classic looks.
Encourage collared shirts, blouses, or light sweaters—they photograph well.
Avoid trendy graphics or neon colors that can date the photo.
Extras:
Have a conversation about posture and natural smiles—they're at the age where they’re self-aware.
A little chapstick or hair styling product can go a long way.
General Guidelines (All Ages)
Avoid white tops on a white/light background unless layered.
Stay true to your child’s style—confidence shows on camera.
Double-check for stains or wrinkles the night before.
